WPGA Handicap Revision Schedule - 2009

Without the cooperation of Member Clubs, the Association’s championship program would be impossible to conduct.  On behalf of the WPGA and the contestants, thanks are extended to the following clubs/courses for their cooperation and enthusiasm in hosting the 2008 championship schedule. (more)
New Eligibility for Tournament of Champions (11/14/08)
The WPGA Championship Committee has opened the Tournament of Champions to more players, and it will be renamed the Spring Invitational.  The one-day 36-hole competition will be available for a maximum field of sixty players.

Players who have won any WPGA competition during 2008, members of the 2008 Amateur, Junior, and Senior Honor Rolls, and 2008 Member Club champions, will automatically be accepted into the competition upon entry.  Other contestants may apply, and the committee reserves the right to select from that entry pool as it sees fit. Fred Brand Foursomes eligibility to change (10/30/08)
Since 1954 when Jack and Fred Brand began the Fred Brand Foursomes in memory of their father, Fred Brand, longtime professional at Allegheny, partners were required to be from the same club.  The Brand has been played at two clubs, each for twenty years plus—Allegheny and Longue Vue.  Due to declining entries and other factors the WPGA Championship Committee has established the following conditions for entry in the 2009 version. Scholarship Applications due January 7 (10/27/08)
WPGA Scholarship candidates for the 2009-10 school year must submit applications to the WPGA office by Wednesday, January 7, 2009.

To be eligible, applicants must have been employed at a WPGA Member Club for at least two golf seasons in any department—golf shop, caddie, maintenance, and club house.  Candidates must have financial need, strong academic records, including college test scores, and be involved in extra-curricular activities in school, community, and church. (more)

Tri-State pros receive PGA of America's Annual Awards (11/17/08)
Jim Antkiewicz, Director of Golf at The Club at Nevillewood, was named the PGA of America’s Professional of the Year for 2008.  A caddie as a youngster at Ambridge Country Club, he has worked in this area as an assistant at Allegheny under the guidance of Roy Vucinich, head professional at Highland, 1983-95, after which time he moved to Nevillewood, where he has worked for the past fourteen seasons.  Antkiewicz has been heavily involved in organizations both at the Section and national levels. Wheatcroft, Mills, advance to Tour Finals (11/17/08)
Steve Wheatcroft, Washingon, shot 67-69-65-68—269, at Hombre GC, Panama City, Florida, in the second stage of PGA Tour Qualifying, advancing to the finals.  His 19-under par total was his second medalist performance in tour qualifying this session.  He also won the first stage at Martin Downs CC’s Osprey Creek Course, Palm City, Florida.  Wheatcroft secured his PGA Tour card in 2007, tying for seventh in qualifying, but did not retain playing privileges. Carol Semple Thompson inducted into World Golf Hall of Fame (11/13/08)
November 10—St. Augustine, Florida—Sewickley’s Carol Semple Thompson was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame for lifetime achievement at the World Golf Village in St. Augustine, Florida.  The 2008 class includes players Bob Charles, Craig Wood, and Denny Shute, who won the 1937 PGA Championship at Pittsburgh Field Club.  Others inducted were golf writer Herbert Warren Wind and architect Pete Dye, a longtime friend of Carol.
